Whether it's sharing a birthday cake, enjoying a sweet treat with your afternoon coffee or tucking into dessert at a family gathering, food has a special way of bringing people together.
But for those living with food allergies, intolerances or coeliac disease, these everyday moments can sometimes come with an extra layer of worry. Checking ingredients, asking questions and making sure there's something suitable to eat can take some of the joy out of occasions that should be fun.
At Lazy Day, we've always believed that nobody should have to miss out on life's little indulgences simply because of their dietary requirements.
It All Started with a Simple Idea
Lazy Day was founded in 2006 by food scientists Dr Sally Beattie and Emer Bustard, who understood first-hand the challenges of living with dietary restrictions.
Sally has multiple food allergies, while Emer is coeliac. Back in 2006, when they were both juggling busy family lives, finding delicious free-from treats wasn't nearly as easy as it is today.
The options were limited, and while manufacturers understood which ingredients needed to be removed to make products suitable for certain dietary requirements, finding alternatives that tasted just as good as their mainstream equivalents was another challenge entirely.
As food scientists, Sally and Emer knew there had to be a better way.
So, they started experimenting in their own kitchens, developing recipes for some of their favourite sweet treats. After plenty of trial and error, they created delicious free-from versions of classics including Millionaire's Shortbread and Chocolate Tiffin.
Friends and family loved them, and before long, what started as homemade bakes turned into a business with one simple mission: to make free-from treats that everyone would want to eat, regardless of their dietary requirements.
Free-From Without Compromise
One thing we feel strongly about at Lazy Day is that free-from shouldn't mean settling for second best.
Just because a cake doesn't contain gluten, milk or eggs doesn't mean it should be any less delicious!
Each product is developed with the same goal: to create something so delicious that you'd choose it for its taste, not just because it's free-from.
After all, the best compliment we can receive is hearing that someone who doesn't follow a free-from diet loves our treats just as much as someone who does.
Making Everyday Moments More Inclusive
Think about the last time you celebrated a birthday, brought cakes into the office or had friends round for a cup of tea.
For most people, choosing something sweet is as simple as picking what looks nicest. But for someone with dietary requirements, it often involves checking ingredients and wondering whether there's anything they can enjoy.
That's why having delicious free-from options available can make such a difference.
Whether it's a Mini Vic Caterpillar Cake at a children's party, a Chocolate Cake for a family celebration or a piece of Millionaire's Shortbread with your afternoon coffee, we want more people to be able to enjoy those moments together.
Our entire range is gluten-free, milk-free, egg-free and suitable for vegans, produced in our dedicated free-from bakery in Scotland.
Of course, everyone's dietary needs are different, so it's always important to check product packaging and allergen information before serving.
But we hope that by making great-tasting free-from treats more widely available, we can make life that little bit easier for people navigating food allergies and intolerances.
From Two Kitchens to Shelves Across the UK
A lot has changed since Sally and Emer first started baking in their kitchens almost 20 years ago.
What began with a handful of recipes and local farmers' markets has grown into an award-winning bakery in Harthill, Scotland, where our team makes cakes, traybakes and biscuits enjoyed by customers across the country.
Today, you can find Lazy Day products in major retailers including Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Waitrose, alongside independent stockists and our online shop.
While Lazy Day has grown and evolved over the past 20 years, the belief that inspired Sally and Emer to start the business remains at the heart of what we do today: creating delicious free-from treats that everyone can enjoy.
We're constantly working on new flavours, developing exciting products and finding more ways to make delicious free-from treats accessible.
Because the more places people can find something suitable and delicious, the easier it becomes for everyone to enjoy life's little moments together.
Join in the Joy!

As we celebrate 20 years of Lazy Day, we're proud of how far we've come and even more excited about what's still to come.
